GRE Test

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is the exam that is taken before you can apply to graduate school. It is very important to prepare for this exam and it is usually best to study for it for 3-5 months. In the United States, the exam costs $160 to take, so you want to make sure that you get the most out of your money.

The GRE will take 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete and it consists of three primary sections, Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing.

Verbal: The verbal reasoning sections measures the students ability to read and understand information. This includes a variety of topics which include main idea, vocabulary, inferring missing information, and also conducting counter arguments. There are typically about 10 total passages to read in this section, each with up to 6 questions. The passages are also drawn from a variety of fields as well. There are 2 sets of 20 questions for this section and you are given 30 minutes to answer each set.

Quantitative: The quantitative reasoning section measures your basic knowledge of mathematics. The majority of these topics were learned at the high school level and include algebra, statistics, and geometry. Most of these questions are also in in the format of word problems. There are 2 sets of 20 questions for this section and you are given 35 minutes to answer each set.

Analytical Writing: The analytical writing section will measure your ability to construct a thesis and stay focused when supporting your claims. There are 2 essay questions for this section and you will be given 30 questions to answer each.

The verbal and quantitative sections are scored on a 130-170 point scale, which are measured in 1 point increments.The writing section is scored on a 0-6 scale, which is measured in half point increments.

There are also several different GRE subject tests that may be applied to whatever graduate program you are applying for. The length of each of these exams is 170 minutes.
